Review: Rusty Taco

Today, my friend and I went to a sit-down fast-food taco restaurant that just opened up in

Denton, Texas on Hickory Street called The Rusty Taco. I had actually never heard of this place until one of our mutual friends introduced it to us. When we arrived, it sounded like a fun environment for college kids--and I was right. It had an energetic and fun staff, and a fun atmosphere. The place was packed, and we were able to order almost right away because they had two registers open. There's plenty of seating, but not if it's crowded. We had to sit at the bar area, which wasn't horrible, but also wasn't preferable either. It did work fine though. 

Being somewhat excited to try a new place, my friend and I waited in anticipation for our food. Sitting at the bar area, we could see them prepare it, which was pretty cool. They worked very quickly and we figured it wouldn't take long....boy were we wrong.

What they didn't realize is I expect good customer service. I'm a journalist/blogger and my husband works in retail in a wealthy part of the DFW area. We've both learned the importance of good quality service. 

It took them a total of 25 minutes to get my friend and me four tacos. And these tacos are not your average large tacos from Taco Bueno or Taco Bell. They're the small kind--very small. I got a brisket barbecue taco and a beef fajita taco. My friend got a BBQ taco as well, along with a breakfast burrito. From what I could see at the counter, the brisket was already prepared. They seemed to be able to put together a taco within a few seconds. 

My friend went to the front and asked what was taking so long, and we didn't hear anything back. Then, I went up there and said how long we'd been waiting. Finally, they called my name. But, my friend ordered first and asked (before I did) what took so long. It took her tacos at least five more minutes to arrive. They apologized to me, not offering anything to me as an apology. Then, they apologized to my friend, and asked her if she wanted any chips and queso. Of course she said yes! 

As we sat annoyed eating our food, I noticed there were chunks of fat in my beef fajita taco. It was also way too salted and not worth the $2.50 I paid for it. The only good part about that taco was the cilantro, cooked onion, and the flour tortilla. My second taco, the BBQ brisket taco, was actually delicious. It wasn't over-salted and the meat was tender. The vegetables also blended well and the flour tortillas were great.

They gave my friend some chips and queso, and we spit it. They make their chips homemade, and they are also delicious. The queso went great with them. This was my favorite part of the meal. 

When we finished and walked out of the restaurant, the girl up front again apologized for the wait and requested that we come back again. I told my friend I would not come back, and she said she might.

Overall, this place needs a lot of work with its food and service. They are also the most over-priced taco place I've ever been to. I have never paid that much for a taco in my entire life, and waiting 25 minutes for two tacos is unacceptable. I could make more tacos than that in less time. Don't waste your money here. The portions are too small and their customer service needs a lot of work. It's definitely not worth it.
